The Greek Centre once again became a Friday night favourite when Live at The Greek launched its 2017 series on 16 June with a sell-out performance by Lavant Garde.
The Delphi Bank Mezzanine was at capacity to see new band Lavant Garde delight the audience with a classic Greek laika, entexna and rebetika. Featuring Evangelia Baxa (vocals), Jacob Papadopoulos (bouzouki, tzoura), Chris Kimon (guitar) and Irene Kostetsou (keyboard), Lavant Garde had the sell-out crowd on the dancefloor all night with well-loved Greek classics.
A fortnightly music program that showcases Melbourne’s best Greek musicians, Live at The Greek celebrates both traditional and contemporary sounds.
The 2017 launch comes after popular demand following last year’s successful series, which saw over 150 people flock to The Greek Centre every second Friday for a taste of Melbourne’s Greek music scene, with a varied program that included rebetika and soulful Greek roots, as well as regional celebrations.
Another sell-out show followed on 30 June with the Epirotiko Ensemble, who took listeners on a ‘taxidi’ through the region. Featuring Arthur Kostarakis (clarinet, vocals), Tony Iliou (laouto, vocals), Nikos Kapralos (guitar, vocals), Polyxeni Theologidis (vocals) and John Kostarakis (percussion, vocals), the ensemble played a vast blend of traditional songs about history, love and hardship, together with classic dance pieces that had the audience up on their feet.
